Improving food security for family farmers in southern Rwanda through the development of a sustainable agricultural model. That is the noble goal of this project.

Action plan to promote sustainable farming in southern Rwanda.

In Rwanda's Southern Province, food production remains insufficient, and soil fertility continues to decline. Yet, the vast majority of the local population relies on agriculture for their livelihoods, and most farmers live below the poverty line. In response, HOGENT initiated an action plan in 2017, in collaboration with the Province of East Flanders, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières, Broederlijk Delen (a Belgian NGO committed to international solidarity and sustainable agriculture), and several local NGOs, to promote sustainable agriculture in the region. As part of this partnership, HOGENT experts provide guidance on sustainable farming practices, and students contribute through internships and bachelor theses, adding to the body of knowledge on the topic.

In 2019, a more in-depth research project was launched with the support of VLIR-UOS, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices tailored to the region. The project emphasises three key areas:

  • improved access to quality seed, specifically for maize, soy, and disease-resistant cassava

  • enhanced soil fertility through crop rotation, the integration of fodder trees, and erosion prevention

  • optimisation of dairy cattle feeding by improving fodder production and implementing preservation techniques such as silage

Through this research and the establishment of demonstration fields, the project will contribute to the development of an integrated and sustainable agricultural model that will serve the region for years to come.
