HOGENT stands proud on May 17: United for Inclusion.

May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT). Unfortunately, a day like this is still very much needed. Even today, people face hatred and exclusion, simply for being themselves. IDAHOT raises attention for this issue. It’s a day of solidarity and connection, to which HOGENT would love to contribute.

The date isn’t a coincidence. On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. A huge step forward, but not at all the end of the struggle. Discrimination still exists in all sorts and all kinds of places. IDAHOT aims to make that visible, but also wants to show that it can be different: that there’s a space for respect, for differences and for one another.

All around the world actions take place on this day: demonstrations, art projects, conversations and flags displayed. Organizations, schools, companies and governments show their support. HOGENT also makes sure not to let the day pass by unnoticed.

What does HOGENT do?

During the Week of Diversity, which coincides with IDAHOT, HOGENT strongly promotes connection and inclusion. Across campuses, the rainbow flag is flown as a visible symbol of solidarity. Through a variety of awareness-raising activities, such as discussions, open mics and creative events, HOGENT encourages openness and a sense of belonging for everyone. By promoting awareness and active participation, we show our commitment to create a campus where all identities are welcome & valued.

Why is this so important?

To this day, there are people who have to adjust or defend themselves, simply for who they are. Even though Belgium has made great progress in terms of legislations, social acceptance is a different story. That’s where the real work begins.

Visibility makes a difference. When we show our support for eachother – with flags, conversations, or simply by listening – trust grows. Ignorance decreases, people feel supported, and step by step we build a place where everybody can feel at home.

HOGENT stands for inclusion

HOGENT aims to be more than just a place of learning: it strives to be a place where you can truly be yourself. On may 17 we highlight humanity, respect and equality. So put on that bold outfit, wear your colours with pride and show us that you choose solidarity. Because standing up for what you believe in starts with you.
