Sustainability coordinator.

This short, intensive on-campus programme Sustainability Coordinator (March–May 2026, 30 ECTS) immerses you in high-impact interaction with experts and international students and life long learners. It prepares you to step into the role of sustainability coordinator within an organisation or to work as a sustainability advisor. In addition you will become a sustainability pioneer in the first European internationally-oriented micro-credential programme certified with a UNITAR training certificate, and also the first micro-credential programme of the U!REKA European University.

Ready to move beyond theory?

This programme first provides you with a solid theoretical foundation in sustainable development, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the EU sustainability reporting standards. Building on this, you acquire a practical toolkit to function effectively as a sustainability coordinator or advisor.

Through interactive methods, hands-on assignments, and a real-life project in an organisation, you will learn directly from experts and apply your knowledge immediately to real business cases.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between HOGENT and CIFAL Flanders | UNITAR, recognised by a UNITAR training certificate for participants. UNITAR is the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

The programme is open to students from all academic backgrounds — including business, law, science, economics, languages, and social sciences. Whether you are new to sustainability or already have a strong academic background in sustainability, you will gain invaluable practical tools and hands-on insights from this program, preparing you to make a real impact.

The programme's course structure is as follows:

We start with a foundational understanding of sustainable development in the course "The UN and sustainable development". Further exploration of the different SDGs is facilitated through four specific courses: SDGs for the Planet, SDGs for People, SDGs for Prosperity, and SDGs for Peace and Partnership. A separate course focuses on Circular entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation.

As a sustainability coordinator, you will require a toolkit to guide your work. This includes the ability to measure and report value creation by applying EU sustainability reporting standards. You will also need to effectively communicate, raise awareness, and initiate change. These essential skills are developed in the courses on measuring and reporting sustainability and in the course change management, and communication.

The programme culminates in a Sustainability Coordinator Project. In this project, you will identify the necessary steps for an organisation to achieve a sustainable future scenario. You will formulate a sustainability strategy and develop a proposal for its implementation, applying all the competencies acquired during your training.

Admission requirements

You already have a graduate, bachelor's or master's degree or you have already obtained 60 ECTS in a graduate, bachelor's or master's programme. A good level of English (approximately B2) is required to follow classes, interact and complete assignments; this will be checked during a short intake interview.

I already had a solid theoretical background in sustainability, but this programme provided me with the practical tools to apply it in an organisational context. It also revealed how the SDGs are interconnected — for the first time, everything came together and I can now put it into practice with confidence.
